Other lactic acid bacteria besides ''O. oeni'' also have some malolactic fermentation capabilities. ''Pedioccocus'', ''Leuconostoc'' and ''Lactobacillus'' species are often present at the beginning of MLF, but generally die off in wine towards the end of MLF.
